A full day on foot in Gauja National Park, the oldest and largest national park in Latvia. Locals call this valley the Switzerland of Latvia, and once you are down among the sandstone outcrops and springs it is easy to see why. I grew up in Sigulda, so this is the walk I know best.
The route
Twelve to thirteen kilometres through forest trails and down into the Gauja river valley, with stairs up to the viewpoints that make this stretch of the park worth the effort. Along the way we pass Krimulda Manor, the sandstone cliffs above the river, and the natural springs the valley is known for.

Why is Sigulda called the Switzerland of Latvia?
Because of the shape of the land. Latvia is mostly flat, but the Gauja has cut a deep valley here, leaving sandstone outcrops, steep wooded slopes and long views that look nothing like the rest of the country. Locals gave it the nickname long before it was a tourism phrase.
Do I need to be an experienced hiker?
No. It is a long day and there are stairs, so a reasonable level of fitness helps, but the route follows marked trails rather than anything technical.
Can I do this as a day trip from Riga?
Yes. Sigulda is one of the easiest places in Latvia to reach from Riga, and the hike is built as a single day out.
